Attend the HB 2261
Public Hearing

Wed. March 25, 8 a.m.
Senate Hearing Room 1
Cherberg Building, Olympia

Good and bad news – basic education reform is moving through the legislature, but getting meaningful reform out of the Senate isn’t looking good.

We can’t back down now – it’s time to turn up the heat on our legislators to make sure that the bill that passes provides the real reform Washington’s schools need.

Support for improving our schools this session is weaker in the Senate than in the House.

That’s why we’re gathering in Olympia next Wednesday, March 25th at 8 a.m. to speak out at the HB 2261 hearing. Reply to this email to confirm you can attend the hearing!

Next Wednesday is our chance to tell Senate Education Committee members that their reluctance to make progress this session is out of step with what the public wants.

We need large numbers of citizens there to show them we demand progress this session:

  • an improved definition of Basic Education that includes full day kindergarten
  • 24 core credits required for high school graduation
  • early learning for at risk 3 and 4 year olds
  • assurances that future funding will go to the model schools program, class size reduction and improved school staffing ratios

Promises for future are not enough – we need reform now. We must urge the Senate Committee to maintain the important reform components in HB 2261. To make that happen, the Senate needs to hear from us. HB 2261 is the stronger of the two reform bills – we need to support it. Learn more about the bills here.

The Senate has to vote HB 2261 out of their committee by Monday March 30th. Next Wednesday is our chance to ensure they don’t water down HB 2261. Reply to this email to let us know you’ll be there!

Even if you can’t be there, you can send them a loud and clear message. Add your name to our petition:

We need to tell lawmakers why our education system needs change, and why these changes must happen now. Washington’s one million schoolchildren are depending on us to speak for them. Sign the petition today, and reply to this email if you can join us on Wednesday!
