The member-led endorsement committee of our Tacoma Chapter unanimously agreed that Dexter Gordon and Karen Vialle are the champions for students we’ve been looking for on the Tacoma School Board. Gordon, a University of Puget Sound professor who heads the university’s Race & Pedagogy initiative, brings more than a decade of experience as a parent of a Tacoma student and as a community activist on issues surrounding the achievement and opportunity gap for students of color. Vialle is in her ninth year as a substitute teacher in Tacoma Public Schools, primarily based in Sheridan and Lister Elementary Schools on the Eastside of Tacoma. She also formerly served as mayor of the City of Tacoma.

Both candidates rose above their opponents with their ideas for hiring and evaluating the superintendent and for improving the school district’s communication with traditionally underrepresented communities. Additionally, Gordon and Vialle impressed the committee with their keen understanding of the Board’s responsibility to improve student achievement. Gordon summarized his perspective of the School Board as “leaders in creating a culture of excellence in our district.”

Comprised of Stand members who represent Tacoma Public Schools educators, parents, community members and a current student, the seven-member endorsement committee sought to identify candidates who will keep the district’s mission and strategic plan in view while navigating the challenges Tacoma faces in trimming the budget, improving student performance, and embarking on another superintendent hiring process.

“Both strike me as being doers and not just sayers. They both were very straightforward about improving the district’s past or current decision making practices and making real progress in student achievement. They both showed a desire to find a fair and equitable way to make sure that information about decisions gets back to the community. I believe they have the ability to inspire and carry out their vision while serving on the School Board.”
